My twin sister, Christina, wanted to match outfits for her surgery and the days of her healing. We really didn’t dress alike as twins growing up. Only on picture day or special occasions did our mother match our outfits. Today, matching our clothes is just a fun demonstration of how close we are as twins. If I find a shirt that I really like or that reads something cute, I’ll buy two of them–one for me and one for my twin. I feel like the small gestures in life do an amazing job at symbolizing bigger, abstract truths.
People wear black when they mourn. Wear their favorite jersey on game day. Go barefoot to demonstrate the need of the poor. And wear a cross around their neck to show their faith. These are simple symbols that carry meaning for many people. These are the metaphors of life. Metaphors compare two unlike things together to make a point. The Bible is full of amazing, beautiful metaphors that help us understand spiritual truths that may otherwise be beyond our comprehension.
In the Bible, the Bread is Jesus’ body broken for us, so that His Blood (wine) could spill onto the earth. The Blood is the essence of God, mixed in earth (flesh) and poured out onto humankind, so we could be reconciled (brought back) to a Holy God. Such a beautiful metaphor, the bread and the wine, but so under appreciated and/or distorted in a world that has lost touch with their Creator.
We have one way to come into the presence (heaven) of a Holy God, and His name is Jesus Christ. Our God allowed Himself to be born into a world that would crucify Him all because He loves us so much. He gives us this extension of love not because we are good enough, but because He is. No matter who we are, what we’ve done or where we are at, God wants us to come to Him.
