Forsaken Jesus
“About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?’ (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”) (Matthew 27.46 NIV).
Jesus took our forsakenness, so we would never be forsaken. When Jesus hung on the cross, it wasn’t the pain that made him cry out. It wasn’t our sin He took that caused Him to petition God. It was the separation He felt from God. All Jesus had ever known was connectivity to God. But as He took the sins of the world onto His shoulders, He felt God look away because God can have no part of sin. And for that short time, Jesus called out to His Father, feeling the physical and spiritual death upon Him, asking: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Because of Jesus’ Finished Work on the Cross, those are words that we will never have to utter. Regardless of what happens in this life, if we have Jesus in our hearts, God will never leave or forsake us. Jesus took our separation from God and gave us His connectivity to God, so that in this life and in the next life we can dwell in the presence of our Heavenly Father. Jesus filled the gaping hole that divided us from God with Himself. He took our forsakenness, bridged the gap that sin created and drew all of the earth to Himself, resurrecting us into new lives with Him.
“Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you’” (Hebrews 13.5 NKJV).
